Why can’t readers decide on a common configuration file that stores subscribed feeds (obviously), items read in those feeds and so on.

This could then be stored either locally or more usefully in the “cloud” on Dropbox, Box.com, a personal WebDAV location, etc allowing multiple readers to keep up to date.
